Winging to KENTUCKY! (+111.5 Miles)
December 4, 2009: Migration Day 50

Photo: Operation Migration

Oh, Happy Day! On a GREAT day to fly, Brooke led all 20 brave birds right over Wayne County, Illinois and onward to Union County, KENTUCKY! They were in the air for just under three hours. It was so cold that Joe got frostbitten feet. (See link below: Brrrrr! It's COLD Up There!) They all deserve a good rest in their new stopover site. What will tomorrow bring? Let's hope they add to their 462 miles gone.

CraneCam is live each day from about 6:30 to 10:00 a.m. and again from 3:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon. TrikeCam is live during migration flights.

In the Classroom

  • (a) Today's flight was over 100 miles. What have you noticed about the flight distances for each leg since day one? What are some reasons that explain this? (b-for-bonus) This morning's temperature at 4 a.m. was 25F, but felt likt 20F with the windchill. Pretty cold! How do you think the pilots cope with such cold temps in their tiny, open airplanes? After you think how YOU would handle the cold, see our story: Brrrrr! It's COLD Up There

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
