Mission
almost accomplished! After being penned at Gilchrist County
since
Dec. 11, the five cranes headed for Chass
gave pilots Joe and Richard
a real rodeo upon takeoff! Finally they were airborne about 8:24
a.m.
By 10:20, crane-kids #3,
#9, #15,
#16,
and #17 had flown from from
Gilchrist
County
to
Marion
County,
Florida. The pilots led them over a grateful, thrilled
crowd at the Dunnellon-Marion County Airport for the arrival
celebration. Joe had four birds and Richard had one (see
photo). Then they landed the five birds at the Halpata pen.
(More news and photos coming.) Will the "Chass Five" finish
their migration to the release pen on Chassahowitzka NWR tomorrow?
The weather is totally in charge! Either way, we'll cover the day's
