Their pen is down where hilly ridges start. Alas, the pilots found trashy (bumpy) air when they reached the pen site. The wind goes over the hills here, so taking off would have been the problem. It would have meant a good tailwind if they could have gotten the birds up in the air. But taking off and gaining altitude through trashy air means too much rock and roll.
