No Getting Up (+0 Miles)
October 15, 2010: Migration Day 6

Photo Heather Ray, Operation Migration

The winds were right but the birds are still stuck in south Juneau County, WI. Their pen is down where hilly ridges start. Alas, the pilots found trashy (bumpy) air when they reached the pen site. The wind goes over the hills here, so taking off would have been the problem. It would have meant a good tailwind if they could have gotten the birds up in the air. But taking off and gaining altitude through trashy air means too much rock and roll. It's not safe with birds flying so close.

Pilot Joe said upon landing, "It's FREEZING this morning!" How do you think the pilots stay warm in the open aircraft aloft with the wind racing past? See today's "In the Classroom" for more.

In the Classroom: Journal or Discussion

  • (a) How do you stay warm in cold weather? How do you think the pilot keeps warm in an open aircraft with the wind racing past? See this page for more: Brrrrr! It's COLD Up There!
  • (b-for-bonus) Why is it necessary for pilots to wear the costumes while flying?

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
