November 2, 2010: Migration Day 24


After gaining miles two days in a row, the birds are down today due to winds. Yesterday pilot Brooke led 9 of the 11 birds here, and pilot Richard led #2-10 and #3-10. This was #2's first opportunity to fly a complete migration leg. How many miles did he fly? (See his bio page.) Do you think he's now inspired to fly more? Let's hope we find out tomorrow, with a good day to fly.

  • (a) Have you updated your charts? (Daily Data and Distance Traveled) How many miles have the cranes migrated so far?
  • (b-for-bonus) Yesterday's lead pilot, Brooke, wrote about two ways the lansdscape was different from migrations in years past. "Free of her crops, Illinois had become a giant welcome mat to the sky wanderer, an unending landing strip that joined the horizons. Another difference was the proliferation of wind farms whose pinwheel armies seemed to march across the landscape . . .They are farmers, too. They harvest the wind of its bounty of kilowatts. Still, I'd feel a lot better about them if they were painted John Deere green." What do you think Brooke meant? Explain his concern. What things in the environment are YOU concerend about?
