Exercise on a Down Day (+0 Miles)
November 11, 2010: Migration Day 33

Photo Operation Migration

On this, the fifth day down, the birds got some welcome exercise. The steady flow of warm air from the south will bring another warm day. As soon as the winds shift, the birds will be able to depart Piatt County, IL. If you didn't see it in yesterday's report, here is a reminder: Last year (2009) the team didn't even arrive here until November 27. The year before that (2008) it was November 21. The weather will change!

A Contest! You can help the team win a grant for $25,000 to continue helping the cranes! Visit the Pepsi Refresh Challenge website to vote for Operation Migration today. You can vote every day until Dec. 31.

In the Classroom: Journal or Discussion

  • (a) How do you think the team gets the birds to come back to the pen on exercise days? How does your parent get you to come inside when it's time for dinner? How does exercise help the cranes? How does exercise help you?

Click on Journey North's Resource Maps. Find one of today's wind maps. Then find a weather map that shows high and low pressure cells, which influence the direction the wind blows. When do you think a change in the wind direction will occur?

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
