Too Windy Up High (+0 Miles)
December 6, 2010: Migration Day 58

Students from the Wakulla High School Advanced Placement Science class helped other volunteers and staff prepare the cranes' enclosure at St. Marks NWR before the birds arrive.

With only six flights remaining for the St. Marks five to reach home—and another four beyond that for the Chass five—the team is eager to GO. It won't be today, however: The right-way winds at altitude still have too much power. How far have they come so far? Let us all send up hopes for them to leave Chilton County, Alabama and reach Lowndes County, tomorrow!

In the Classroom: Journal or Discussion

(a) What preparations might the helpers in today's photo have done to make the pen at St. Marks ready for the five young Whooping cranes who will live there this winter? Have you ever worked to prepare a place for visitors? What things did you think were important?

(b-for-bonus) You might like to track changes in the wind on this wind map. How are maps like this helpful? What other types of maps do you find useful? For starters, see the link to Weather and Climate Maps at the bottom of Journey North's map gallery.

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
