No Go: Rain (+0 Miles)
October 13, 2011: Migration Day 5

Drizzle, dampness, downpours and puddles. The cranes don't mind, but it's no flying weather for their migration. From camp in Green Lake County, Liz writes: "Today will be a day of organizing 'people gear', and for some of us, doing laundry and grocery shopping, while we all keep our fingers crossed for better weather tomorrow."

In the Classroom: Journal or Discussion

  • (a) Migration Math: How many young Whooping cranes hatched this year in the new Eastern flock will be making their first fall migration? View this page, then fill the blanks with numbers: There are ____ colts in the ultralight-led group, plus ____ colts in the Direct Autumn Release (DAR) group, plus ____ wild-hatched colts. That makes a total of _____ HY 2011 whoopers making their first migration south. Record in your journal.
  • (b-for-bonus) Making Comparisons: What are two ways in which this migration is different from last year's migration? Seeing this chart will help you answer. How many miles was their longest flight? (Now you see what's ahead!)

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
