No Go: Too Windy to Fly (+0 Miles)
October 24, 2011: Migration Day 16

Whooping cranes at migration site #1.

Overnight storms cleared but the wind is too strong for safe flying. This is down-day two at Marquette County, Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Liz sends an update from camp: "Missing crane #2 is either on the move, or, we're searching in all the wrong places, or, her transmitter has failed. We are beginning to suspect the latter, but we will keep looking." Take a close look at this photo as you consider today's questions:

In the Classroom: Journal or Discussion

  • (a) How many birds do you count in the pen in the photo above? Read the flight report from October 21. Was the photo taken before or after the flight?
  • (b-for-bonus) Which crane in the photo looks different? Do you have any guesses about why it looks different? Stop here to think before you read on for Heather's answer.

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
