October 28, 2011: Migration Day 20

Ultralight plane takes off with young whooping cranes.

Whoop! Flying two days in a row, they made it to the final stop in the state of Wisconsin! Today's flight of 38 miles to Green County, Wisconsin was the longest yet for these young cranes. More details on who flew and who didn't will be posted later. Celebrate a good week of progress for our "beginners." They'll get better and better ahead.

In the Classroom: Journal or Discussion

  • (a) Fill in the blank: The next flight will take the cranes across the border to the state of _________. The migration has now covered _____ miles in all. See data page to help you answer. If you are making your own map, use the lat/long to make your dot for Stopover #4.
  • (b-for-bonus) If cranes fly at 35 mph, approximately how long would it take them to cover today's distance? What effect would headwinds or tailwinds have on their speed?

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
