November 1, 2011: Migration Day 24

Whooping cranes are penned with pumpkins on a no-fly day..

Image: Operation Migration

November begins in LaSalle County, Illinois—the same place the migration found itself last year on this date. A bit of history: Nov. 1 last year was migration day 23, and the Class of 2010 flew from Winnebago to LaSalle County. We did that yesterday! Alas, we are are grounded today by strong wrong-way winds. But compare progress to 2009, when it was November 15th before the migration reached LaSalle County. In 2008, the first year on this more westerly route, it was even later: November 18th. We're doing fine!

The TrikeCam broadcasts LIVE each day they fly.
