Calm air, 23 degrees—brrrrrr, but a good day to fly! Today's lead pilot was Joe. He launched shortly after 7 a.m. with all nine cranes locked onto his wing. They were eager to go! Joe still had four birds as they entered Alabama and Richard had five. Today the birds didn't want to land but after being airborne for 2.5 hours, the planes didn't have enough fuel to skip ahead to the next stop.
The cold air was a reminder of the very unusual day when they landed at this stop, Franklin County, on December 12 in 2008. Click here to see why! In 2009 it was Dec. 17 (day 63 then) before the cranes and planes were Alabama bound. Last year (2010) it was December 2 when they skipped over Franklin County and soared on to Walker County, Alabama, gaining 110 miles in two and one-half hours of flying. The miles are adding up; they're now at 693 miles gone!
