Whooping Crane Departure Log Whooping Crane Western Flock Instructions: Once (or twice) a month in spring, Biologist Tom Stehn flies over the Refuge in Texas to count the cranes. Using Tom's counts, you can record how many whooping cranes are still on their wintering grounds in Texas and how many are already migrating.
