Richard van Heuvelen

Richard van Heuvelen has been an Operation Migration (OM) ultralight pilot since 2002. He also led the ground crew for the 2001 migration and filled in as back-up pilot. A Canadian, Richard has four daughters: Megan, Sara, Katie and Jessie.

Richard is more than a pilot. Team leader Joe Duff says of Richard: "If anything is broken Richard can fix it, and if it doesn't exist he can create it."

When he's not flying or training the birds, Richard works as a very talented metal sculptor. Out of solid steel he creates life-like sculpture—including Whooping cranes and other wildlife. Joe Duff adds, "If he were not trying to safeguard an endangered species, he would likely be a famous artist and far richer." That's the power of Whooping cranes!

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure made possible by the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
