Role Assignment
Read the following situation. Your job will be to persuade the International Whooping
Crane Recovery Team to agree with your group's perspective, so read carefully, taking
on the role of
Facilitator:
- Each group will get five minutes to present.
- The Recovery Team will establish rules and let the interest groups know those
rules prior to the first presentation.
- Everyone should be encouraged to ask questions and to role play as seriously
as possible.
- If the interest groups do not receive data in their initial packet, they are
free to assume information.
- Encourage students to realistically put themselves into their roles an to work
together as a team to understand all aspects of the simulation.
- The groups will be in charge of organizing their own strategies, leadership,
and presentation format. Each group will be given five minutes for their presentation.
You may wish to provide materials for some visual aids.
Remind students to keep in mind:
- Act as if you truly are the group that you have been assigned.
- Try to understand your role as fully as possible.
- Strive to organize your presentation well, as you will have only five minutes
to present your viewpoint.
- Be prepared to defend your position, as you will be questioned by the Whooping
Crane Recovery Team.
Each group will be asked to consider the following:
- What is the environmental issue?
- What are the values associated with all sides of the issue?
- What environmental factors are being discussed concerning the issue?
- What human factors are being discussed?
- What are the economic factors?
- How are citizens involved with solving the issue?
- How are agencies involved with solving it?
- Are there any compromises proposed or possible?
- Do you agree with your role assignment and the stance that you took?
