At the pen we set up camouflage panels in front of the blind. A small tent shielded the cranes and workers from direct sun. The tent also kept the chicks in the pen from seeing what happened in the tent. Sara and Brian (in costumes) carried the cranes from their pen. Usually two birds were in the tent. One got its bands while the other got the health check.

Many experts are needed for health checks and banding. Veterinarians Scott Terrell, Chelle Plasse, and Lydia came from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Operation Migration pilot Richard Van Heuvelen, Patuxent’s Brian Clauss, ICF tracking intern Rosemary Hartman and I (Eva) were helpers. We assisted Biologist Richard Urbanek and aviculturalist Sara Zimorski in banding the cranes.
