The new arrivals — the chicks that hatched last spring — are free to fly, play, and explore during the day. The crane handler counts at night to see that they return to roost in the safety of the pen, or another safe place. A feeding station inside the pen provides a constant supply of high-protein crane chow and fresh water. A small roof keeps rain out.
