Tom Stehn is the Refuge biologist and world-class crane expert. Tom drives where no visitors are allowed on the Refuge . He checks on the cranes with his binoculars. He checks the grass for wolfberries, which cranes like to eat. He wades in the marsh to count blue crabs and check the water salinity (saltiness). If the marsh is too salty or water too low, blue crabs and fresh drinking water may be scarce. Blue crabs are the most important crane food. The birds need fresh water to drink. They must fly off to find food and drinking water if there's a shortage on the refuge.
