Tom must count all the whoopers of the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock as they spend winter in Texas. Tom and a pilot fly over the Refuge until all the crane winter range (about 54,600 acres) is covered. This takes about 8 hours. Tom plots all Whooping cranes sighted on 9 aerial photos of the crane marshes attached to a clipboard on his lap. It's not easy! “I sometimes think that every white pelican and snowy egret for miles around flies to Aransas every week just to get counted," says Tom. Our eyes have much to sort through to find all the Whooping cranes.”
