Feasting in the Arctic

By June, adult and juvenile gray whales are well into the vast, food-filled arctic waters. Some cow/calf pairs are getting close to home, while others still are on their way. Over the next five months the hungry migrants will gain back an estimated 16 to 30 percent of their total body weight, lost during the migration south and the winter in Mexico where their food is scarce.
