Identifying Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds
Scientists and birdwatchers use field marks to identify ruby-throated hummingbirds.

Ruby-throated (male)

  • Crown: metallic dark green.
  • Throat: metallic ruby-red, can look black in some light
  • Back: metallic green or bronze-green
  • Wings: near-black
  • Breast and belly: usually brownish-gray
  • Sides: metallic bronze-green
  • Tail: Forked. Feathers pointed and all dark (no white tips)

Ruby-throated (female)
Same as male EXCEPT

  • Throat: white, or with occasional faint tan streaking
  • Breast and belly: white
  • Sides: light brown
  • Tail: Fan-shaped. Feathers all rounded, with white tips on the outer 3 feathers on each side of tail.
