Identifying Rufous Hummingbirds
Field marks are physical features or behaviors of an organism that can be clearly seen and used to distinguish the organism from other similar species. Scientists and birdwatchers use field marks to identify rufous males and females.

  • Crown: brownish with some green
  • Throat: metallic orange-bronze, can look black in some light
  • Chest: white
  • Back: brownish-red, or rust; some green at the shoulders
  • Wings: near-black
  • Sides: brownish-red, or rust
  • Tail: brownish-red or rust
  • Rump: brownish-red or rust
  • Crown: green with some brown
  • Throat: white with tan streaking, occasionally a few red feathers
  • Chest: grayish-white
  • Back: green
  • Tail: with white tips
  • Rump: green
