Mexican President Fox Announces
New Enforcement Plan for Monarch Forest Reserve
November 28, 2001

Please Thank President Fox (Address below.)

Today Mexican President Fox visited the monarch sanctuaries. Calling the monarch migration "the heritage of humanity'' he announced a program to protect their forest reserve from illegal logging. "In the last 28 years we've already lost 44% of the forest," he said.

It has been estimated that 2/3 of all logging in the region is done illegally. These violations have been blatant. When visiting the region, it is common to see logging trucks filled with oyamel firs driving down from the mountains in broad daylight.

President Fox has now directed the Mexican agency responsible for protecting the forest (PROFEPA) to assign 60 new inspectors to patrol the forests and roads of the monarch reserve. He has made the operation permanent, and has promised to guard the forest 24 hours a day.

  • The beautiful messages children included with their Symbolic Monarchs would be a delight for him to see.
  • If time, feel free to make a Symbolic Monarch to send to the President.

Thank you for expressing your heartfelt appreciation to President Fox for his commitment to conservation. This is a very important and powerful gesture.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Howard
