Teachers' Guide for November 3, 2006

The suggestions in this guide are provided to help teachers integrate Journey North's Tulip Garden study in the classroom.
This guide accompanies the Tulip Garden Update for November 3, 2006.

This Month

The Art of Predicting Seasonal Change
This month we are practicing the art of predicting spring’s arrival in gardens around the Northern Hemisphere. Students may start to think about how geography affects the timing of seasonal change. Gather resource maps that show landforms. Open discussions about how elevation or bodies of water can affect temperature and climate.

Partner Gardens
As the map fills up with garden sites, you can begin to plan how you might partner with other students across the globe. Remember that you can contact any of the gardeners. Simply click on their brown sqare and connect through their Field Notes report email link. There are many extensions to this activity. Take a look at some of the things you might consider >>

Journey North Garden Journal
Use this journal cover and student page as we designed them, or edit them to meet your needs. When you first plant your garden in the fall, have each student complete a journal page. In late winter or spring, as they look for changes in their garden, they should complete a new page every week or two. As they do, help them use their observations (evidence) to refine their predictions. >>
