Poor Man's Fertilizer The fresh blanket of snow that fell in New England this week might be called a "poor man's fertilizer," according to an old wive's tale. Actually, there is some truth to this tale. Snow contains nitrogen and other elements that were suspended in the air. Because a spring snow often falls on thawed soil, its moisture and nutrients percolate slowly into the soil as the snow melts.
