A good article that is somewhat recent appears in _Canadian_Geographic_, May/June 1993, Volume 113,#3. "Winged Wonder" is illustrated by wonderful photos, especially of the wintering sites and the environmental degradation that is taking its toll on wintering sites. An aerial view of clearcuts and a section of a wintering site which appears as an unusual orange hue, clearly demonstrate the need for conservation. To make this even more first hand, one of my student's mother has just returned from the world girl gude centre near Mexoco City. One of their side trips was to a wintering site. She found a tagged butterfly on the ground outside the limits of returned with it. We now have first hand evidence of this amazing phenomena. My student is writing a report to post here, as well as a contact with the scientist at the U of Kansas who originally tagged the Monarch. Hope you are all enjoying Journey North. Has anyone got any other motivational ideas for gade 7 and 8 students that could get them latched on to a specific topic related to migration, just as the student above? If so, please share!
