December 12, 2010: Migration Day 64

Today's gusty winds and approaching rainstorms are grounding both groups of birds. It is Down Day #1 in both Jefferson County and Gilchrist Counties, FL. After yesterday's tough flight, the five birds at Gilchrist County are 86 miles closer to their winter home and Chass, and the NEXT flight for each group will be their Arrival Flyover Event and welcome celebration. If it happens before Dec. 31, it would be the first time since 2005 that the migration got finished in the same year that the young cranes hatched! You're invited to join the celebrations with these directions from Operation Migration:

Welcome Flyover for St. Marks NWR: Birds 1, 5, 6, 8, and 10
The Arrival Flyover event and viewing site is at the San Marcos de Apalache Park in the town of St. Marks, Florida. South of where Hwy 363 (Woodville Hwy) intersects Coastal Hwy 98, 363 becomes Port Leon Drive. Follow Port Leon Drive to the end, turn right onto Riverside Drive/Old Fort Road and watch for the Arrival Signs on your left. You
will be directed to parking.

Welcome Flyover for Chassahowitzka NWR: Birds 3, 9, 15, 16 and 17
The Arrival Flyover event and viewing site is at Florida's Dunnellon-Marion County Airport, off HWY 484 just east of the town of Dunnellon. Turn north off 484 onto SW 147th Circle, then right onto SW 111th Street. You will be directed to parking.
