Banding the Hummingbird

Once Nancy has checked to see that a hummingbird doesn't already have a band on its leg, she bands it as soon as she can. It would be a shame if a hummingbird managed to escape before she had banded it! She has to work carefully to make sure she puts the band on securely without being too tight, and without getting feathers stuck in the seam when she closes the band. She uses the forceps to tighten the band securely.

Banding the Hummingbird
See how carefully she works on this Rufous Hummingbird! This bird was already banded. She's just moving feathers away to look closely at the band number.

Here she bands a Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
