Georgia Educational Technology Conference
Description: Mystery Class, an Interdisciplinary Adventure. Journey North's Mystery Class is an 11-week investigation in which students try to find 10 secret "Mystery Classes" hiding around the globe. We are conducting a concurrent session at the Georgia Educational Technology Conference on Mystery Class. Principles of ecology and techniques for field studies of monarch butterflies will be presented for in-depth scientific inquiry. Teacher/student/naturalist teams will learn to:
· increase the use of public parks, natural areas, and schoolyards as outdoor laboratories for active scientific inquiry,
· make public parks, natural areas, and schoolyards more accessible as outdoor classrooms to teachers and students ,
· increase public awareness of conservation issues leading to protection and preservation of wildlife and natural areas, and
· use technology resources to form networks (Journey North, Monarch Larval Monitoring Project, MonarchWatch) between the scientific and educational communities and to communicate scientific data, especially related to monarch migration.

"Classroom Metamorphosis" workshop will include journey north material and information on starting a school butterfly garden. The material is correlated to 4th grade New Jersey core curriculum content standards. The cost of the workshop is $15.00 and participants get professional development credit, a butterfly rearing cage, monarch larva, host plants and seeds for butterfly loving plants.
