    "What are some reasons why North American owls might breed in mid and late
    winter?"

    They probably breed in the middle of winter because the nights are longer and
    the days are shorter so they have more time to be out.

    It is safer in winter because most animals migrate or hibernate and they
    don't have as many enemies trying to get their eggs.
