When rivers and lakes are frozen eagles may scavenge frozen road-killed
carcasses. How do they eat this hard meat in winter? Eagles beaks are
designed to open up fish and other meat. Their mouths and throats are
designed to swallow big chunks. They also rely on other scavengers to
break the ice on road-killed carcasses.
What these foods have in common is they are meat which is high in protein
and give the birds a whole lot of strength.
