Eagle
Migration, Map and Data |
What
is Migration?
Eagle migration does not fit a neat definition. Most eagles do not migrate directly
to and from their nests each spring and fall, as people think birds do. As you
track Nye's four eagles, you will see why these terms don't fit.
Mapping
the Migration
Notice the legend. There are two symbols for each
eagle. The small, faded circles show the eagle's path from its breeding
grounds. The eagle's path will be shown
with the larger, brighter circles as soon as the eagle appears to have stopped
moving south and into its winter range. The larger circles will also show the
northward path. Learning
from the Maps
Your job is to try to define each eagle's southward
migration, the wintering grounds range and its northward migration.
We hope you'll enjoy the challenge! |

A
Migration Highlight |
Highlight: U21
on the Move
Bald eagle U21 made an interesting movement
this past week. After over 3 weeks in one place she moves toward
a new location. Why? What makes the eagles move around in their
winter range?

Will
the eagle locations change if the region receives the snowfall
predicted for this week? How will it affect the eagles? Write

Comparing
Fall Migrations: Digging Deeper
|
Last
week we looked at fall migrations. It's hard to believe all 4 of these
birds were captured in the same area when you study their different
migration patterns!
Sharpen your pencils to collect data from this
map, then solve these
questions! Which eagle:
- departed
first (leaving breeding ground)
- arrived
first (to wintering ground)
- took
longest time/shortest time
- traveled the most in one day (average)
