Explore! Map Quest U27
“It is interesting to note,” writes Peter Nye, “quite a few of our winter-captured adults and our young fledgling eagles appear to go down to the Chesapeake Bay area. Locate this area on your map, and zoom in and see if you can find Aberdeen Proving Grounds. (Try Google Maps >>.) This area is favored by the eagles. It is at the mouth of the Susquehanna River which flows into the Chesapeake Bay from the north. As of 9 March, U27 remains in the same area.”
  • What is the Aberdeen Proving Grounds?
  • Do you think this would be safe eagle habitat?
  • What hazards could there be for eagles?

What is the ideal habitat for Bald eagles? Remember: Habitat is a place with all the requirements necessary for a plant or animal to live. Habitats include the required food, water, cover, and space.

  • Describe the ideal eagle habitat in your journal.
Journal Question: When Will U27 Leave Aberdeen?
Use the Eagle Map Archives >>

Peter Nye challenges us to do some research using data from the Journey North Archives. He asks, “When do you think U27 will leave? Look up her departure date last year. The time is very close!”

This week we have a 2-part question.

Question #1:

When did U27 start her migration in spring 2006?

(Hint: Click on Spring 2006 map, then select U27 on the drop-down menu. Zoom in and click to study the dates.)

Use this for Question #1

Spring 2006 Map
Weather maps can be helpful tools for predicting eagle behavior. Will colder weather keep eagles on their wintering grounds longer? Let’s look at the map showing temperature anomalies (how much colder or warmer temperatures were from what is normal for the week).
Where are the satellite-tracked eagles on this temperature map? Describe the temperatures on their wintering grounds. (Hint: Remember purple means 9 degrees colder than normal.)

Then answer:

Question #2:
When do you predict U27 will depart from Aberdeen?
