Map and Data

Lots of news and data for you this week. Several maps will give us a look at the eagle's locations and where they have been.
Read and enjoy "Eagleye" Nye's greeting. Then learn of the latest attempts to lure eagles into the bait in New Hampshire.

  Explore! Eagle Migration
What is Migration?

Eagle migration does not fit a neat definition. Most eagles do not migrate directly to and from their nests each spring and fall, as people think birds do. Two years of data from NY eagles U21, U25, and U27 offer us a clear snapshot of these birds' migrations.

Mapping the Migration
Notice the legend. There are two symbols for each eagle. The small, faded circles show the eagle's path from its breeding grounds. The eagle's path will be shown with the larger, brighter circles as soon as the eagle appears to have stopped moving south and into their winter range. The larger circles will also show the northward path.

Learning from the Maps
This week we can study the eagles' migration paths southward from their summer grounds. We'll give you the maps to compare the fall/winter 2006-2007 migration with movements this past fall. We hope you'll enjoy the challenge!

Maps and Questions
Satellite technology is an amazing tool for scientists. Eagles U21, U25, and U27, all captured in January 2006 carry backpack satellite receivers (PTT's). These high-tech backpacks have sent signals of their locations for 2 full years now.
You be the scientist:

  • Study each map >>
    Where are the eagles today?
  • Print 2 copies of handout, "Comparing Fall Migrations" >>
  • You and a partner study eagle maps for 2007 and 2008, and for each year record:
    • When departed first (leaving summer grounds)
    • When arrived first (to southern wintering ground)
    • Information about distance and time traveled
  • Compare 2007-2008 Fall/Winter migrations with 2006-2007 Fall/Winter migrations for each of these bald eagles.

How far did each eagle fly?

News from the Field
Greetings from Pete "Eagleye" Nye
Hello Journey North:
Thanks for coming along with us again for another exciting season of eagle work in New York State, but as you long-timers involved with JN know, this study goes way beyond New York into many exciting and far away places!

Eagle Country: Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River

In 2008 my work continues its studies focused on the Upper Delaware River area of southern NYS...More from Eagleye >>

Update from Christian Martin in New Hampshire

Hi Journey North!
Our news this week is that we do not yet have any eagles wearing transmitters, so no map data for you at the moment. I plan to provide you with an update next week which will detail our efforts to "convince" the eagles to come to our capture site. Stay tuned!
