Maps and Data

Eagle habitats are of vital importance for wintering eagles. Conservation biologists call them essential or critical habitats. Knowing what habitats these birds use, we can then determine if the areas are threatened and might be lost. If so, we can work to have them protected.

We can now see patterns on the map where the eagles continue to hold steady. Only one eagle shows movement within her winter range this week. Take a close look and start seeing like a scientist!

  Explore! NY Eagle U27
Getting to Know You: U27
Let's get to know bald eagle U27 a little better today. Since her capture in February 2006 we've mapped her on 2 spring migrations.

Where does U27 go each winter?
Where will she return in the spring of 2008? Study the maps of her spring journeys.
Then predict when she'll head north in 2008.

Capture and Release — All on the Same Day!
Slide-show >>

February 1, 2006 was a big day for eagle U27. On that day she was searching the icy Delaware River for a meal. She spotted other birds — crows and immature eagles feasting on a large dead animal on the shore and dropped in for a taste. What she quickly found out was Peter Nye and his team had a net trap all set up to catch her.
Find out what happened to U27, then watch a slow-motion, live action video of her release.

Journal Question: Why Move Around on the Wintering Grounds?

Of all our eagles, U25 is the most active traveler this winter. In mid-February U25 crossed the US-Canadian border and once again headed back south into NY state. Since Feb. 2 she has traveled north into Canada and then back south to her current location.
What factors do you think causes this behavior? Make your own theory:

  • What is necessary for bald eagle survival? Make a list.
  • Study these maps for additional clues.

Arrows show direction of U25's movements

Use your Bald Eagle Journal to explain your theory about why U25 has moved around this winter.

News From the Scientists
The NH Eagles (No Eagles, Yet!)
"Hi Journey North!"
"No new words yet about capturing eagles this week. Our next time period when the rocket net technician and I will be in NH at the same time is 3/10 thru 3/14. That's when I'm hoping we will get the job done!" - Chris Martin

The NY Eagles
Pete "Eagle-Eye" Nye sends this week's data and then turns around to head into the field for a week. So far, no large migratory movements. March is here, though, so stay tuned...!
