Bald Eagle Field Observations: Winter 2009

Observers reporting in to Journey North have seen some fascinating eagle behavior! Read each eagle sighting report below. Then get out your eagle journal and sharpen your pencils.

Make a list of all the different things observers reported seeing eagles eat. Include some interesting facts about eating behaviors that they have reported. Then write at least one thing you learned about eagles by reading these citizen reports.

  • Our home is on a community lake at the North West edge of Wichita KS, I watched a Bald Eagle diving toward the water and snag a fish, then fly away toward a pasture. Wichita, KS 2/21/09
  • Saw 3 immature bald eagles at Lake Mehagh in Buchanan, NY. One had a white head but still mottled colored body. One dove to the water twice but did not come up with anything. Buchanan, NY 03/01/09
  • Several people have reported seeing eagles feeding on deer carcasses this week--on the Gravesville Road. I drove up this afternoon and 3 of us watched one mature bald eagle feast on a carcass in a field about 100 yards from Gravesville Road. Gravesville-russia, NY 02/17/09
  • I counted 27 Bald Eagles at the Soo dump at 5pm of Feb16, while birding for the GBBC. Sault Ste Marie, ON 02/16/09
  • We saw 4 bald eagles at the Merrimac River Eagle Festival. They were fishing in the open water off of Deer Island, Amesbury, MA. One eagle snatched a fish from a seagull in flight. Another dove for a fish and flew off to eat it in the pine woods. Two adult eagles perched on the same tree. Amesbury, MA 02/14/09
  • Today I observed over 20 Bald Eagles on the ice flows of the hudson, Most Immature, at least 4 adults. One adult was in a tree feasting on a DUCK while 3 immatures sat around watching. Stoney Point, NY 02/09/09
  • There is a pair that returns every year to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens in Virginia. They already have three eggs in their nest. There is a web cam on them 24/7 since their arrival in early Feb. Visit the Eagle Cam >>
  • We were driving down the highway and my daughter spotted a bald eagle eating on a dead deer on the side of the hill. Capitan, MN 02/07/09
  • Driving country road. Temp about 67 sunny and windy. Saw a young male bald eagle swoop near the front of my car and land in ditch clutching something in his tallons. Stopped and watched him take off with what appeared to be a large mouse or gopher. Fayette, MO 02/06/09
