Tulip Garden Update: November 13, 1998

Today's Report Includes:

Digging In!
Another 105 gardens have been planted since last month's update, for a grand total of 145 gardens! Have you planted a tulip garden yet?? There's still plenty of time if you act quickly. Be sure to report your garden so we can include it in the study.

In Swarthmore, Pennsylvania (39.90 N,-75.35 W), students from Robin Saunders' class reported planting their tulip bulbs on October 28. They said "we're looking forward to charting spring along the Eastern Seaboard but have noticed that there are not too many gardens planted yet south of us!!!" This is a good reminder to you schools in the southern states--Zones 8-11--to remember to report your gardens:

"Across the pond" in Scotland, (56.40 N, -3.00 W), another international garden has been planted. Mrs. Miller reported that her students planted their garden on October 30, 1998.

Back in Chaska, MN (44.80 N, - 93.63 W), two classrooms learned that you just never know what "artifacts" you might discover when you plant a tulip garden. Mrs. Rienstra's and Mrs. Grave's class "thought they found a dinosaur egg--only to discover they had dug up potatoes planted the previous spring! In our digging, we found several earthworms and an acorn buried deep! The children learned how to use a trowl, a ruler, and thought the tulip bulbs looked like huge chocolate chips!"
