Observing Throughout the Season

Offer hungry hummingbirds a variety of flowers and fresh nectar, and the birds will give you opportunites to observe them throughout the season. What nectar sources are you offering hummingbirds?

"First sighting of a female this year. She fed on million bells, bleeding hearts and lilacs," wrote Paul in Holbrook, New York on May 25th.

Where did my hummers go?
Now at the end of May, observers are noticing that it seems their hummingbirds have virtually disappeared.

"It's been quiet. I guess females are busy building nests and sitting on eggs," wrote Karen from Jackson, New Jersey on May 25th.

Hummingbird expert Lanny Chambers says one reason for the lull in sightings this time of year is females are tending their nests. Females are out in search of insects and spiders for their chicks. In addition, abundant natural nectar is available.
