1. Get Ready With Riddles
Build background knowledge and sleuthing skills with a vocabulary challenge. Identify key words and concepts for Mystery Class that may be unfamiliar to your students. In small groups, have students track down definitions and relevant information for each word you provide. Next, have students use the information they find to create riddles on index cards. Challenge students to exchange and answer riddles. Periodically assess students' growing knowledge by reading riddles aloud for the class to solve.

2. Report Your Photoperiod New this year! Beginning January 30th, Mystery Class participants may report photoperiod every Monday, January 30 - April 9, 2012. The Mystery Class photoperiod map will display data reported by participating classrooms. (The 10 mystery sites will not appear on the map!) Use the photoperiod map as a tool to visualize seasonal changes in sunlight around the globe.

Track sunlight to solve a mystery! Mystery Class is a global game of hide-and-seek. Students follow photoperiod clues to search for ten secret sites around the world, and discover the reasons for seasons along the way.
