Question:
Why is nectar so important to monarchs during their fall migration? Why
must the monarchs hurry?
Answer:
Mrs. Nunnally's second grade class at Peter Woodbury School
in Bedford NH thinks nectar is so important during the fall migration
because if they don't have nectar they will die, butterflies need food
just like we need food; if
the butterflies don't store fat, they can't last the entire winter;
when they migrate they need energy that they get from nectar.
Monarchs
need to hurry because if they waste their time, the flowers will die
and they won't have food. Also if they stay in the north, it will become
too cold with too much snow and they will die. The butterflies need
to hurry south because they need nectar and sunlight.
