Observations from Citizen Scientists: Week Ending August 28, 2008

Thinking Like Scientists: In order to gather useful information, scientists collect measurable data and/or make observations over time. What do these citizen scientists count, measure or compare over time?

August 24  Port Hope, Ontario (43 N, -78 W)
"It has been such a cold and rainy summer. Today I spent about 4 hours working in my garden and saw ONE monarch flying south. Last year at this time, a steady stream of monarchs had been going south for more then 2 weeks. Lots of them. I'd estimate about 50-60 monarchs per hour every day for about 2 weeks or more!" >>

August 24  Gove, Oklahoma (37 N, -95 W)
"Numerous monarchs, about 3-5 per hour, were noted today at the shore line of Grand Lake." (See photo.) >>

August 25  Toronto, Ontario (43 N, -79 W)
"I collected about 67 monarchs over 3 hours today. About 4:30 pm the winds died down and I was surprised to suddenly start capturing beautiful pristine monarchs - including many dark females with thick veins. Were they heading west along the Lake Ontario shoreline or south along the river that runs through Oakville, and drawn in by strong fragrance of the flowering plants?" >>
