Exploring the The Monarch's Winter Home in Mexico

Why do Monarchs fly to Mexico from across the continent?
Their special habitat is critical for the monarchs' survival.
Each week we'll explore a piece of the puzzle.

Monarchs, Mountains and Moisture

Dr. Lincoln Brower

"I have a series of pictures that tell a neat story of how the monarch's forests capture moisture," begins Dr. Brower. "The condensation that occurs in these high altitude Oyamel forests is crucial for the butterflies’ overwintering success in Mexico. Yet, while the moisture provides critical hydration for the butterflies, it can also kill them…Here is how all this happens."

Journal Question: Where Do Monarchs Find Water?

Take a look at Dr. Brower's slide show and record your thoughts in your Journal, Surviving the Winter in Mexico. >>
