Challenge Question #1: How Many Monarchs in Mexico?

Question: There are 4.61 hectares of monarchs this winter. If there are 10 million monarchs per hectare, how many butterflies are there? What if there are 50 million monarchs per hectare?

Answer: There would be over 46 million butterflies if there are 10 million per hectare or over 230 million butterflies if there are 50 million per hectare.

First we estimated how many butterflies would be in 5 hectares. That would be 50 million. Then we used the calculator to help us multiply 4.61 times 10 million. That would be 46.1 million butterflies. Next we estimated 50 million butterflies in 5 hectares. That would be 250 million hectares. Omar was able to figure this out by counting 50 million 5 times. Then we used the calculator to actually multiply 4.61 times 50 million. That was 230.5 million butterflies.

If there are 10 million there will be 46,100,000 Monarchs. If there are 50 million per hectare, there are 230,500,000 Monarchs! That's a LOT of beautiful We can't wait till the migration North begins!!
