Challenge Question #7: Where will they go next?

Question: Now that the monarchs have arrived in Texas, where do you think they'll go next? Name the next 12 states you think the migration will pass through, in order. Why do you predict the monarchs will travel this way? Give reasons to explain your thinking.

Answer: So far, the migration has arrived in these five states in this order: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. We'll see what happens next.

Congratulations to these students for predicting the route so accurately so far!

Mrs. Fiedler's 2nd grade class in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania:
We think they will take this path based on the data from the average temperature maps and the milkweed maps. Since Monarchs need milkweed and warm temperatures are needed for milkweed to grow and for Monarchs to survive, we have predicted this list for their journey north! We can't wait to see them!!

Louisiana
Mississippi
Arkansas
Tennessee
Alabama
Georgia
South Carolina
North Carolina
Virginia
West Virginia
Maryland
Our state!!! Pennsylvania

Mrs. Nunnally's 2nd grade class in Bedford, New Hampshire:
We think the monarchs will go to these 12 states next: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. The monarchs will go through these states because it will get warmer and there will be more milkweed in the south and then the states that are further north will start to get warmer and grow milkweed.
