Challenge Question #8: What Have They Survived?

Question: How many risks can you name that the monarchs alive today have survived? Think back to the beginning of these butterflies' lives last summer. Name everything you can imagine and send us your list!

Answer: Monarchs that are still alive in early April are true survivors. They have survived for 6-7 months!

Mrs. Fiedler's 2nd grade class in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania sent their list of challenges they know monarchs have faced.

"We brainstormed a list of things we felt were real challenges that the Monarchs had to overcome in order to survive. We not only made this list, but had to explain in detail WHY we wanted each item included. Here they are......

  • cars/ traffic
  • cold
  • wind
  • predators
  • orb spiders during migration south
  • airplanes because we have been sighted that high!
  • bad weather
  • lack of milkweed
  • mean people
  • pesticides
  • tractors
  • lack of stored fat
  • fertilizers
  • not enough trees for roosting due to deforesting

Great job, 2nd graders! Let's all keep adding to our lists as we continue to learn about the monarch's remarkable life cycle.

Far fewer monarchs are alive in the spring than in the fall.
