News: Your Butterflies Make Their Way to Sanctuary Schools

The second shipment of your beautiful handmade butterflies and monarch booklets arrived in the sanctuary area on December 1.

German Medina and Estela Romero began sharing your ambassador butterflies in the town of Angangueo at Colegio Corregidora school. Here, and in the other schools they have visited the students were very excited to see your messages of good will and learn more about the life cycle and migration of the monarch.

Like these students pictured, Mexican students from all around the sanctuary region will greet your butterflies and watch over them during the winter months.

At the same time in the mountains nearby, the entire eastern population of North American monarch butterflies are resting in Mexico for the winter.

Students at Colegio Corregidora in Angangueo were very excited to open their cluster packets!
Muchas Mariposas!

How Many Symbolic Butterflies Traveled to Mexico this year? We predicted that there wouldn't be enough seats in Yankee Stadium for all of this year's Symbolic Monarchs, but what's the Actual Total?

(Drum Roll...)

62,542 butterflies from 3,043 classrooms!

Did you ESTIMATE?
Go find your answer and compare it with ours!
We told you:

  1. The total weight of all butterflies and clusters was 649 pounds, and
  2. 3,280 butterflies weighed 33 pounds.

Special thanks to everybody who sent their guesses! >>

A Day in the Life of a Mexican Student
Noami is a student who lives in the shadow of the monarch sanctuaries. Like thousands of other students, she experiences the arrival and departure of the monarchs that overwinter each year in the mountains near her home.

Travel with her on a typical day. Learn about her school and her home life. Explore her story in English or Spanish!
