Symbolic Migration Update: December 3, 2010

The mighty little red Volkswagen is delivering symbolic butterflies to the children of Mexico. Estela takes your butterflies and her "green talk" to the schools to share the importance of conservation. Your contributions to the Monarch Butterfly Fund are helping to conserve the monarch migration now and for generations to come. Learn more about the Monarch Butterfly Fund and find out who contributed.

Butterflies In Mexico

Rocinante's work has begun! The mighty little red Volkswagen is seen here carrying the first of many loads of butterflies up the mountain to a local school.

Conservation Shared in a "Green Talk"
All of your butterflies are safely in Mexico and each day Estela visits sanctuary-area schools bringing colorful ambassador butterflies and more.

At the schools Estela delivers a message she calls her “green talk.” This conservation message is important because there is a lot of logging in the area and soil erosion and landslides are a very real problem. She helps the students to see the importance of conservation for their communities and for preserving the monarch sanctuaries. After the flooding this past spring the children know how serious a problem this can be.

Butterfly Sharing Time
Now comes the symbolic butterfly part. Each child receives a butterfly and reads the messages it carries. This is very exciting! They will make their own messages and pictures to share with the students from the north. Finally, all the students gather as a class to have their picture taken holding their special butterfly.

In January we will be posting lists to help find your butterfly in the Mexican schools. Stay tuned...

Monarch Butterfly Fund: Conserving the Migration

Each fall the monarch butterfly travels thousands of miles to spend the winter in Mexico. This is the longest migration of any insect!

The migrating monarchs find winter shelter in evergreen forests located on only 12 mountaintops in central Mexico. Because of deforestation, these forests are disappearing, and putting the monarch migration into peril.

This year Journey North classrooms sent contributions of $3,372 to support the projects and initiatives that will protect the monarchs’ winter habitat. Your support helps fund the Monarch Butterfly Fund (MBF *).

This year 1,875 classrooms sent symbolic butterflies to school children in Mexico. Contributions for the Monarch Fund were sent from 188 classrooms. A total of $3,372 was donated for conservation work.

Do the Math: If each butterfly carried an equal amount of contribution, how much – in dollars and cents – would each one carry to Mexico?

1875 butterflies carried a total of $3,372. Each one carried $________!
