Donations for Angangueo and Monarch Sanctuary Area

After the disasterous flood in February many people who love monarchs and scientists who've studied monarchs for years gathered their resources and raised funds to help those in need. One classroom of kids held a school-wide bake sale, and another school donated their annual community service funds. To date, nearly $2,500 has been contributed, and contributions continue to arrive daily.

These donations, along with the others, will provide vital economic support to the monarch region as the people work to rebuild their lives. The outpouring of generosity these gifts represent will lend equally valuable morale support at a time the people need it so desperately.

In determining where to direct these donations, we received advice from two organizations with whom Journey North has worked for over a decade, Alternare and Biocenosis. Both organizations have a strong track record of helping the people in the monarch region to develop small businesses, build sustainable homes, learn water and soil conservation practices, all in keeping with monarch conservation needs.

As the infrastructure of the region is rebuilt, sustainable development projects like these are especially important. The landslides and flooding were, after all, the direct result of misused natural resources.

Because of challenges in sending funds between the United States to Mexico, we are not able to send support to Biocenosis. Therefore, your donation along with all others is being forwarded to Alternare.

If you are not familiar with Alternare's work, please take a minute to view their website and/or a slideshow on our website so you can see the scope and focus of Alternare's work:

Alternare's is a long-term, sustainable development approach, rather than an immediate emergency response. I am confident that this is the very best use of donations, because I know Altenare’s work is effective, has a lasting impact, is centered in the local community, and fits with monarch conservation objectives. I hope you can envision how your donation will go to work. If you have any questions or would like to know more, please contact me.

As the monarch butterflies move up from Mexico and greet you this spring, I hope you feel proud of the way you gave so generously to the people who share the monarch’s winter home. Strong connections between people across the monarch’s range are important for long-term conservation, and your generosity is truly inspiring.
