Mystery Class Begins on Monday, February 5, 2001
Rise and Shine! The Journey North Mystery Class project is about to
begin. Monday, February 5 is the first day to record the sunrise/sunset times for
your hometown. Don't worry if Mr. Groundhog sees his shadow or not. See for yourself
where spring will unfold across the globe. Will you unlock the 10 secret Mystery
Class locations?

Carpe Diem! The 10 secret Mystery Classes have sent in their first
sunrise/sunset data. Grab your graph paper and sharpen your pencils and let the games
begin! Will you be able to figure out where each Mystery Class is hiding? Teachers,
get suggestions from a Mystery Class veteran on how to organize your class for this
activity.

We've gathered the second set of sunrise/sunset times for you from
your Mystery friends! What can you determine this week from the changing photoperiods?
Professor Joan Berger also sends you an excellent research tool to look up your own
hometown sunrise/sunset times.

Have no fear, your sunrise/sunset times are here! Get your third set
of times provided by the 10 Mystery Sites. Changes in photoperiod impact the entire
web of life, from plants to animals. Can you see the connections? Do you "See
the Light"?

Today we're four for four! The Mystery sites have now sent their fourth
set of sunrise/sunset data. Can you put the secret locations into a north/south order
now? Where does your hometown fit in the order? Teacher Kathy Isaac shares a literature
suggestion to help understand longitude. Did you figure out how changing daylength
affects the food web for your species? Read how the answers from several classrooms
"enlightened" today's report.

There's no need to go to the edges of outer space to find the fifth
set of sunrise/sunset data from your 10 Mystery Classes. But one man apparently didn't
know this! Do you notice anything changing as you plot this week's sunrise/sunset
times on your graph? Can you predict how your graph will look on March 20? Teachers,
get valuable tips from another Mystery Class veteran about graphing photoperiod.

Happy Vernal Equinox! (A little early.) In celebration, this week's
update is packed full with special clues to help you estimate the approximate Longitude
of the 10 secret sites. See the Clues Calendar that counts down to when your answers
are due. We've also got the latest weekly sunrise/sunset times. Plus, check out the
Florida teacher who "raps" a new Teacher Tip for you, and see responses
to last week's Challenge Question.

Here's the next set of clues direct from your Mystery friends to help
you along on your quest. Last week you estimated the approximate longitude of the
secret sites. Now all you need to know is the latitude of each place and you're there!
Find out who wanted to be a millionaire long before the game show. Plus this week's
sunrise/sunset times, and a Teacher Tip for graphing photoperiod in a different way.

Hot off the wire! We've got breaking news of an upcoming April 1st
news story that will disclose a great new invention (sorry, it's not "Ginger"
but it does have a new worldview). And mark you calendars, just three more weeks
of clues. No April fooling--we also have the latest times and clues from your 10
secret Mystery friends. Also, can you explain why the Daylight Savings Time changes
do NOT change the photoperiod?

You won't believe your eyes! Along with the latest sunrise/sunset
data, your Mystery friends have provided several photos with their third set of written
clues. Just two more weeks of clues to go. Another daylight savings time occurred
at one of the Mystery Sites, but many "bright" students explain why photoperiod
doesn't change. After all, "there is no way we can change the sun."

It's your lucky day! Another set of clues have been provided by your
ten top secret Mystery Friends. But, time is running out--they'll be just one more
set of clues to come. Teachers, be sure
to review the advance rules for submitting your answer by the April 27 deadline. We're also revealing this week's Sunrise/Sunset Data.

The race is on! Are you ready to unlock the Mystery? The final sunrise/sunset
data and clues have arrived. Read the special Instructions carefully and see if you
can tell us where in the world each Mystery Site is hiding. Remember, you must submit your answer no later than Friday, April

Tired of waiting to find out "Where In The World" your 10
secret Mystery friends have been hiding? Wait
no more--today's the day you've all been waiting for! Congratulations
to everyone who participated in this challenging activity. We received a record number
of entries too. Remember to come back next week to "meet" your new Mystery
Friends. Just like you, they've all worked very hard and are really eager to meet
you with their introductions and photos too.

At long last...its time to finally meet your new Mystery friends from
around the Globe. All 10 secret sites have provided their greetings and photos, and
they just can't wait to meet you! So, let's get started! We've also received several
comments from students complimenting the stealthy sites. Did you write these? And
finally, don't forget to send your suggestions for possible 2002 Mystery sites around
the globe. Have a great summer!
