October 20, 2007: Migration Day 8

Today's winds mean no migrating, but it's a fine day for the cranes to get out of the pen to exercise their wings.

Fly or not? The answer was blowing in the wind, coming strong out of the southwest and blowing even harder at altitude. The team will let the cranes out of the pen later today to jump and fly under the clear blue skies. Hang on! It looks like another 2 days before the winds change to the north, bringing the right flight conditions for cranes and planes.

    (a) The cranes will run, flap and fly as they exercise. Why isn't the team afraid they'll fly away?
(b-for-bonus) What will make the winds swing around and change from the southwest to the north? For clues to the answer, learn about the winds associated with high and low pressure systems. >>
