Down Again (+0 Miles)
October 27, 2007: Migration Day 15

Down again. The drizzle is done but a brisk winds and a low ceiling of clouds make poor flying conditions for the 350-pound ultralights and valuable crane-kids. Tomorrow looks like a fly day, so keep your fingers crossed!

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question:
    (a) Winds are blowing 25 to 30 knots out of the south at flight altitude. What would have to change for these winds to be good news for the planes and cranes?
  • (b-for-bonus) Winds are blowing 10 to 15 knots at the surface and 25-30 knots at altitude. How much faster are today's winds aloft than on the ground? Why do you think it's windier aloft?

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
